NEW YORK GIANTS v GREEN BAY PACKERS
9-7 January 15, 4:30 PM | Grass of Lambeau Field 15-1
Author: Melvinvanhorn
The NFL playoffs are beginning, and one of most looked forward to matches is the New York Giants versus the Green Bay Packers on Sunday January 15th.
The Packers have set a franchise record this year with their astounding 15-1 record, with their only loss coming against the Kansas City Chiefs. Their quarterback, Aaron Rodgers has been on pace to break several records, and his quarterback rating over the season is an amazing 122.5.
The Packers have outscored their opponents by an average of nearly 2 touchdowns this season, mostly on the back of their amazing receivers and skillful quarterback.. Their defense has been good at coming up with timely turnovers, but has still allowed more yards than their fans would like.
The Giants won the NFC East with a regular season record of 9-7, and have won their last two games. The Packers lost to Kansas City, and then played an essentially meaningless game against the Lions in the last week of regular season. Matt Flynn played in that game instead of Rodgers. If you combine that game with the Packer's bye in the first round, their starting QB has not actually touched the football in a real game in about three weeks. Some people think he might be slow to start, because of lack of practice. Pierre-Paul, a defensive back for the Giants, guaranteed a win for his team on the 15th. Whether this is a wishful boastful or confidence remains to be seen.
The Giants however looked strong in their NFL playoffs start, with a victory over the Atlanta Falcons last weekend, routing them 24-2. Eli Manning threw for three touchdown passes, and the Giants had a convincing running and passing game. If their defense can stay strong and shut down Aaron Rodgers and his amazing receivers, the Packers might actually have a rough time of it, despite home field advantage. Greg Jennings, one of the top receivers for the Packers, was injured in mid December, and might be well enough to play, which could also have a huge impact on the game.
One of the biggest factors will be if Aaron Rodgers has sufficient time to find his receivers. If the Giants front four can apply enough pressure, the usually composed and calm Rodgers may be unable to make enough completions to sustain drives. Eli Manning is an excellent quarterback as well, and if the Packer's secondary cannot stop him, they are in for a very long day.
The game is going to be played in Lambeau Field, which is an outdoor stadium in the middle of January. This might impact some teams, but the Giants are a cold weather team themselves, and even managed to get past Green Bay last time they meet in Lambeau, in 2008 on their way to a Super Bowl victory. That game however featured an aging Brett Farve, and was not Aaron Rodgers in his prime. There is a lot on the line here, and both teams are strong contenders.
